(Lake Street, Petoskey)
Petoskey is located in Emmet County
Population: 6,056 Petoskey might best be described as the "Big City" small town. Our city has many of the advantages of a larger city with few of the negative features.
The 1990 census was 6,056 population representing 2,163 households. Emmet County offers a wide range of housing possibilities. It ranges from average single family housing units to magnificent lakefront homes on Lake Michigan and on several inland lakes. Nearly half (49%) of the homes in the county are on a city or suburban lot. Condominiums have become very popular in Emmet County, due to the resort housing market. 95% of the condominiums are exclusively seasonal. The average sale price is $125,000.
The people who are moving to the area are generally young professionals, from 20 to 40 years of age. Seasonally, there are many resorters in the summer and from November to March.
Based on the evaluation by North Central Association and the University of Michigan, the
Petoskey Public Schools are among the best in the state.
Petoskey is home to
North Central Michigan College. The scenic 280 acre campus is a half mile from downtown Petoskey. The College continues to grow and improve. Recently, there was an addition of a $2.5 million dollar library and conference center.
Several important "clean" industries have moved to Petoskey or have stayed in the area, because of fine schools, cultural opportunities and outdoor recreation. Some of the manufacturers make products dependent on the latest technology, such as plastics, wire products, die casting and machine shops. Some of the industries have celebrated their centennial, such as wood products manufacturers. We have over 300 acres of industrial park areas for future industrial growth as well. In addition, there are local artisans and craftsmen who make unique products such as wood signs, stained glass products and pottery.
Petoskey is the seat of Emmet County Government. City, state, and county services can all be conveniently accessed. The City of Petoskey owns the electric system. This produces savings for the community, which are passed on to residents and businesses in town through reduced rates.
Petoskey's cultural opportunities are diverse. The Virginia McCune Community Arts Center has a performing arts theater, with display galleries and studios for teaching. The center also sponsors outdoor concerts and local art shows. In the summer, the Bay View Association hosts concerts, theater, opera and dance programs in their historic auditorium.
Our downtown shopping district has a broad variety of stores and shops, from specialty shops to major department stores and national retail chains.
