St. Joseph is located in Berrien County

Population: 9,214 Settlers to the area named the river St. Joseph, after a patron saint of Canada. The village had originally been given the name Saranac (after a Great Lakes ship) and then Newburyport. Then, in 1833, the town was given its current name of St. Joseph. Fort Miami was built on the banks of Lake Michigan and the St. Joseph River by the French explorer LaSalle in 1679.

A century later a trading post was built by William Burnett. By the early 1800's the St. Joseph River was the main transportation thoroughfare for the region. St. Joseph was incorporated as a village in 1834 and later became a city in 1891. St. Joseph also became the county seat of Berrien County.

The brick streets are lined with specialty shops and unique eateries. Be sure to stop at the grand Whitcomb Tower and see the mural of Marquette and Joliet's 1669 canoe journey down the St. Joseph River.
