Author Elizabeth Fry Ellet was responsible for the naming of this community when she commented on the area's bluffs and prairies as lending to the area's description as a "garden spot". Originally founded by Native Americans, the land was opened up in 1851 after a treaty allowing pioneers to survey the area for later settlements.

While Eden Prairie was founded on agriculture and continues to delve into this industry on a limited basis, the city has moved far beyond its simple beginnings. Today, corporate headquarters are located here, along with exciting new developments, including shopping centers and prestigious neighborhoods.
