(Grand Marais is nestled between Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Mountains)
The harbor village of Grand Marais is set on a landscape etched from stone by the water that resides within its two natural harbors and the inland sea of Lake Superior beyond. The Lake is as captivating as it is dramatic - crashing waves one day; stunning silence the next. An ever-changing play of light and color between the water and the endless sky imparts a sensation that has drawn visitors and artists to this rugged shore again and again - and in every season of the year.
Yet the Lake is only one side of the story. Grand Marais sits on the oldest exposed rock on the earth, nestled against the dramatic backdrop of the Sawtooth Mountains; it is surrounded by millions of acres of lush forests graced with rocky cliffs, serene inland lakes, and streams and thundering waterfalls that empty into Lake Superior. Wildlife abounds in the forest; the lakes and streams are alive with fish.
While the surrounding lakes and forests offer an incredible array of year-round outdoor recreation and activities, Grand Marais provides harbor town hospitality, fine dining, unique shopping, a multitude of cultural events and performances, and a host of comfortable accommodations ready to welcome you - and everything is within walking distance. The town of Grand Marais is located along Highway 61, the only semi-major transportation route running through this wonderfully secluded community. The highest point in Minnesota, Eagle Mountain (2,301 ft.) is just to the northwest of Grand Marais, the Superior National Forest, with it acres upon acres of pines and lakes, is literally across Highway 61 from town (i.e. about 100 feet away).
