Walker is located in Cass County

Population: 950 The Walker area is well known for the city of Walker, which has become a tourist attraction in the order of the Wisconsin Dells, and for Leech Lake, one of the largest lakes in Minnesota. However, there is much more to this area than these more publicized attractions.

While Walker and Leech Lake properties have become very expensive, the surrounding areas still offer affordable lakeshore and other property for the less affluent (or more astute) buyer. One can build a fabulous home on a beautiful piece of land without paying a fortune for the real estate, or still find a modest home in such small communities as Laporte, Lake George,

Guthrie, Benedict, Akeley, Nevis or Hackensack. Laporte, for instance, although a tiny entity, has its own K-12 school, and has just received funding for a brand new high school. Federal assistance has also been received for a new sewer system. Laporte has its own post office, a newly remodeled grocery store, a complete service gas and automobile repair station, four churches, and a popular new sports bar and restaurant. Two new pizza houses are under construction.

Laporte is just 14 miles northwest of Walker, and is located on Garfield lake, a relatively undeveloped lake noted for walleye and pan fish fishing. The surrounding area is wooded and scenic . The Heartland nature trail crosses the area from, starting at Brainerd and ending at Baudette. Other lakes in the area include Steamboat and Benedict ( both accessible by boat to Leech Lake by river), Kabekona, Lake George, Belle Taine, Mantrap, and Hart. Prices for lake shore vary, starting from $200.00 per foot, as compared to 2,000.00 per foot for Leech Lakeshore property. These lakes offer the same amenities, such as great fishing, pristine sandy beaches, magnificent forests and peaceful seclusion.

The Chippewa National Forest, another area attraction, consists of 660,000 acres, 700 lakes, 920 miles of rivers, numerous campgrounds and trails and has the highest breeding density of Bald Eagles in the lower 48 United States. In fact, eagles can be seen up close, flying or roosting in trees as one drives along the area highways. Wild game hunting is allowed in some parts of the forest. For more forest information, contact the Forest Supervisor's Office, Cass Lake, (218)335-8600.
