"The Hub of Southeastern Mississippi"

Hattiesburg is located in southern Mississippi in the heart of rolling, pine-covered hills. It may come as no surprise that the city's early economy developed around the vast amount of virgin timberland in the area. With the arrival of the Southern Railway System in 1884, this natural resource was more widely recognized and numerous sawmills and turpentine stills sprang up. A more extensive lumber boom in 1897 was ushered in by the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad.

Today, Hattiesburg is known as an important educational, retail and medical center for the nearly 250,000 residents living in the southeastern Mississippi region. Excellent public schools and several area colleges and universities (University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey College) serve the area. In addition, Hattiesburg's designation as "The Hub", due to its location at the intersections of Interstate 59 and U.S. Highways 49, 98 and 11, has made it more recognizable as a strategic location for businesses. A few of Hattiesburg's commercial tenants include Sunbeam, Kohler, and Western Container. The city was recently designated as "one of the 50 hottest cities for business expansion and relocation" by Expansion Management Magazine.

As Hattiesburg looks to the future it remains cognizant of the rich heritage that helped to mold its unique character. One of the largest historical districts in southeast Mississippi is located here. The Historic Neighborhood District features 115 acres that showcase a variety of architectural styles dated between 1884 and 1930. In addition, various Victorian and Italian Renaissance architecture may be found throughout the downtown area.

Hattiesburg is packed with fun for the entire family. Outdoor activities range from golfing to camping at several area parks, while numerous museums, art galleries and historical museums dot the cityscape of this culturally and historically rich city.

Hattiesburg is located at the fork of the Leaf and Bouie Rivers and is serviced by several ground, rail, and air transportation systems. Hattiesburg is equidistant from Jackson, Mobile (AL), and New Orleans.
