(There are many ways to enjoy the natural beauty in the area)
Petal is located only minutes from Hattiesburg, one of southeastern Mississippi's most important communities. It is this proximity that enriches Petal both culturally and socially. However, Petal does retain its own unique character and a special quality of life that is difficult to find anywhere else. Local law enforcement works closely with the community to insure safety and security, and a low tax base means affordable housing and a cost of living unmatched in nearby communities.
Petal shares some of Hattiesburg's rich heritage. The vast virgin timberland was the basis of the town's early economy. However, even before the nearby lumber booms in Hattiesburg, the Piney Woods were seen as an ideal place to raise cattle and other livestock by settlers of Scotch-Irish descent who lived on the site that is present-day Petal. These settlers had a reputation for their hospitality, which later led to the town's designation as "The Friendly City."
Petal continues not only to maintain a strong economy based on diverse large and small businesses, but its citizens still retain the hospitality of their predecessors. Much of Petal's population has put down deep roots here, raising generation after generation in this small treasure of southeastern Mississippi. The Petal school district is one of the top rated school districts in the state, and with several colleges and universities in nearby Hattiesburg, students will be well trained for a number of career paths.
Petal has many dining and shopping opportunities, along with several cultural and recreational opportunities throughout town. Perhaps the most popular attraction in Petal is the Carter Cabin, the oldest existing structure in the South Mississippi area. Other areas of interest include the International Checker Hall of Fame and the Twin Pines Country Club.
