Happy 50th Birthday (Happy 50th Birthday)

Henderson is located in Clark County

Population: 64,942 On June 8, 1953, Basic Townsite, Pittman, and surrounding areas joined to become the City of Henderson. The city’s theme, "A Place To Call Home," is quite appropriate, as the population has grown from a few hundred to well over 100,000, making Henderson the second largest city in Nevada. Growth continues in all directions and is especially strong in the master-planned community of Green Valley.

Henderson offers quality suburban living just southeast of Las Vegas. It has an executive airport, 2 hospitals, an automall, and numerous shops, restaurants, and businesses including the Galleria Mall and Gallery Commons shopping complex. With emphasis on education, Community College of Southern Nevada and the ITT Technical School have recently expanded their campuses.

Housing starts are, of course, moving forward at a phenomenal rate to meet the demands of prospective homeowners. Buyers can choose from 100 designs offered by over a dozen builders, or one of the 1200+ resale homes and condos now on the market. Homes range from the low $100,000’s to the multi-millions. Two of Henderson’s more widely recognized developments are Lake Las Vegas and Anthem. Lake Las Vegas Resort is a $4 billion, 2,245-acre international resort and residential destination surrounding a privately owned 320-acre lake.

Henderson is no longer a bedroom community. Thirty-seven percent (37%) of employed residents work in Henderson, exceeding the goal set in the 1996 Henderson Comprehensive Plan for 25% in-town employment.  In fact, three times more residents work within the city limits than on the nearby Las Vegas Strip.  (Source: Community Assessment Survey 2004)

The City of Henderson is home to a variety of industries. The predominant business sectors in Henderson include Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate firms; Retailers; and Educational, Health and Social Services firms.

Henderson has also become home to a number of new colleges. In 2002, Nevada State College opened its doors, and the city of Henderson became home to the first state college in Nevada. With the addition of Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine and National University in the past year, Henderson is now home to 13 colleges and universities. Positions in highest demand in the area include those in healthcare fields such as nursing.

Anthem is located in the southern foothills of Henderson on nearly 5,000-acres. When completed, it will be home to more than 30,000 Henderson residents. Sun City Anthem joins the popular Sun City MacDonald Ranch to offer the same great 55+ lifestyle.
