Auburn is located at the intersection of the 43rd parallel of North Latitude and the 72 degree 20 minute North-South dividing line.  Although the first settlers were here before the third decade of the 18th century was complete, it was not recognized as a political entity until more than a century later.  It was a part of Old Chester, and its story is the story of that town until the division took place in 1845.

It was the day by day attention the necessities of life that made the town.  These people changed trails to roads, cabins to homes, forests to fields, boulders to stone walls and a wilderness to a community of homes.

According to the records, John Smith of Hampton deserves credit for being the first to follow the blazed trails into the Longmeadow.  There he felled trees, fashioned logs and laid up the first cabin in Auburn.  This was in 1734.

John and those who came after him deserve our everlasting thanks and respect.  It took courage and fortitude to venture into an unbroken forest where the howl of the wolf was heard at night and the blood curdling war whoop was an ever present concern.

The chronicle of the lives of these people is the history of Auburn.  But this is not the first history of the town and its mother, Chester.  The first was written by Dr. Charles Bell.  It was followed, a century later, by a companion volume by his nephew, John Carroll Chase.

This material has been used fully but with the permission of Benjamin Chase’s granddaughter, Harriet Chase Newell of Derry, to whom thanks is due.
