"Space Town"

Derry is conveniently situated near the intersection of Highway 102 and US 93. Downtown Manchester is just 7 miles to the north, though Derry easily maintains its unique identity.

Derry is best known as the birthplace of Alan Shepard, the first American in space. During his historical flight Derry earned the nickname "Space Town". This town has other famous "sons", including world-renowned poet Robert Frost, who spent part of his young adult years in Derry. The Robert Frost Farm state historical site sits just to the east of downtown Derry. Another popular historic site is the Taylor Mills historical museum. More of the region's history may be found at Manchester's museums and festivals.

The site on which Derry currently sits was once part of the nearby town, Londonderry. After Derry was separated from Londonderry, the local economy was boosted by several family businesses. The H.P. Hood Company, which produced dairy products for shipment to Boston, was perhaps the most famous and was begun in 1856. Fourteen years later, Colonel William Pillsbury purchased a large number of buildings for his shoe manufacturing company. The latter provided a major source of employment until the plant was destroyed by fire in 1960. Today, Derry's business landscape is dotted with many family-owned businesses, much as it has been throughout its history. The appearance of high-tech manufacturing companies have replaced the once-thriving shoe company of Colonel Pillsbury.

Derry is located in a county known for its excellent school systems. Derry Public schools are no exception and have been recognized on numerous occasions for their educational programs. For students wishing to pursue higher learning there are many colleges and universities within one hour of Derry, including the University of New Hampshire-Manchester, St. Anselm College and Daniel Webster College.

A significant portion of Derry's population works in Manchester. Like other towns in the Manchester area, housing is a very desirable commodity and many properties spend less than a month on the market.
