City of Keene, New Hampshire

"One of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations"

This city of almost 22,500 people tucked away in southwestern New Hampshire defies easy description. It's a classic small New England town, complete with a wide, gracious Main Street that ends at the door of an imposing white church with a stunning clock tower and steeple. It's a college town, with Keene State College downtown, and Franklin Pierce College just outside. (This undoubtedly helps explain the cafés and ethnic restaurants that thrive in the center of town.) But Keene is also an important commercial hub, the seat of Cheshire County. So all major shopping and services are here, as are the headquarters of a national insurance company and a handful of fairly large manufacturing companies.

Keene's great location and thoroughly appealing look won recognition in 2003 from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which named Keene to its list of "America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations," citing its well-managed growth, architecture, historic preservation, locally owned businesses, and appeal to families. The Trust called Keene a "Currier & Ives landscape come to life."

Keene NH Pumpkin FestivalCenter Stage, a nonprofit organization that produces community events, has helped Keene carve out its own quirky niche. In 1991, the city started an annual Pumpkin Festival on Main Street. And in the past few years, Keene has gained international recognition for its Pumpkin Festival, which holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the most lit Jack-O-Lanterns . . . 28,952 all at the same time.

Keene also has a lively arts scene. The nonprofit Colonial Theatre on Main Street offers movies, concerts by widely known musicians, and other live entertainment. Keene State College mounts performances at its Redfern Arts Center, and the town has an active film society that holds screenings.

The location is great, too. Keene is located almost at the geographic center between New England and New York State.
