"New Hampshire's Lakes Region Shines"

Laconia and Gilford are situated in one of the most beautiful regions in New Hampshire - and that is quite a compliment considering that the entire state is covered with rolling hills, rivers and lakes. Not only are Laconia and Gilford blessed with the awesome backdrop of the White Mountains, but this region of New Hampshire has a name - the Lakes Region. Within a 30-minute drive of either town are five of the state's largest lakes. Winnisquam Lake and the more popular Lake Winnipesaukee are virtually a part of Laconia and Gilford's landscape.

The Town of Laconia

Visitors will quickly take notice of the aforementioned natural beauty in Laconia. Needless to say, recreational opportunities abound in the outdoors, ranging from water skiing and swimming at Weirs Beach during the summer months to snow skiing at the Gunstock Ski Area in the cold winter months.

Laconia has a vibrant cultural and historical fabric that permeates everyday life here. Numerous museums and local organizations celebrate this rich heritage, such as the Belknap Mill Society (which holds its meetings in the oldest unaltered textile mill in the United States), and the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad and Hobo Railroad. Laconia's character has been molded from the first settlers to this area - Native Americans that arrived 10,000 years ago. The town's early economy subsisted off of agriculture. However, as the nearby lakes became better utilized they helped fuel the textile and manufacturing industries. Today, Laconia is gaining popularity as a great place to live and work. Visitors will sense the values and traditions those early settlers began so long ago.

The Town of Gilford

Gilford is the "little brother" of Laconia. The town is just minutes to the northeast of its big brother and shares the same beautiful lake views and quality of life. Both towns are served by excellent schools districts that have been recognized for their fine teachers and educational programs.

Gilford is officially the site of the Gunstock Skiing Area, providing residents a cheaper (and closer) alternative to the more exclusive White Mountain resorts. The town also shares the same cultural and historical richness as Laconia and many local museums showcase the region's progression as a popular recreational and commercial center.
