Madison is located in Morris County

Population: 15,918 Madison is a small suburban community located in Morris County. Although Madison is primarily a residential community, it is also home to three Universities; Drew, Fairleigh Dickinson, and The College of St. Elizabeth, whose presence provide many unique cultural opportunities for the citizens of Madison to enjoy. Madison is also home to several large corporations including Schering Plough and Atlantic Mutual Insurance. Madison boasts excellent schools and a wide variety of recreation programs including the Madison YMCA.

Madison’s broad tree lined streets still reflect the colonial characteristics of its early development. It is an affluent residential community that has become a haven for executives and business people who take advantage of the excellent train services to New York City.

Madison is home to approximately 16,000 residents whom occupy its 4.19 square miles.

The Madison Recreation Department provides a variety of activities, special events, and athletics for a wide-range of ages.

There is a strong public school system, which maintains relatively small class sizes and a broad curriculum. There are three elementary schools, one junior high school, and one high school. The high school is also attended by students from nearby Harding Township. In addition, St. Vincent Martyr Church operates an parochial elementary school here and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paterson operates Bayley Ellard High School.

Madison is the home of the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival, the Playwright's Theater of New Jersey, the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts, and the Adult School of Chatham, Madison, and Florham Park.

Madison's downtown is one of the few thriving central business districts in the State. It is supported by a Downtown Development Commission and a Downtown Manager. The Madison Civic Commercial Historic District, which includes much of "downtown" as well as Borough Hall and the train station, is on the State Register of Historic Places. At any time there is very little vacant commercial space.

Madison has been very successful in providing federally subsidized low and moderate income housing. The Madison Housing Authority, established in 1981, has been responsible for the construction of a two senior citizen housing complexes (one with seventy-nine units and the other with twelve) and fifty townhouse units. The latter have been developed under a "scatter site" plan and are integrated into the community. The work of the Housing Authority has been nationally recognized for its quality and performance and its management expertise is in demand from other communities.
