Mendham lies in the southern part of Morris County, just a few miles west of Morristown and less than one hour from New York City. Bucolic, historic, traditional and prosperous are often used to describe Mendham.

In Mendham streams tumble through hilly landscapes of historic homes and winding tree-lined roads. Try to imagine these hills and valleys as they existed 250 years ago. Listen to the buzz of sawmills, the bang of trip-hammers, the clang of anvils, and the hum of textile factories as they echo off the hills and resound through the valleys. These and similar industries were the foundation of Mendham Township’s colonial economy.

The first settlers were attracted to Mendham by the abundance of natural resources. Here they found water to power factories, trees for fuel, and rich deposits of ore. By 1748 the area housed iron forges, sawmills, and a gristmill along the North Branch of the Raritan River.

This early settlement became known as Ralston, after the enterprising Ralston family.

On the eastern side of Mendham, brooks that formed the upper reaches of the Whippany River attracted settlers to the valley called Water Street or Waterville, later known as Brookside. Today Brookside is laced with tailraces, culverts, tunnels, and other conduits, which formed a complex water distribution system that powered gristmills, sawmills, and textile mills. Other industries along "The Street" included a tannery, shoe factory, glassworks, carpet mill, and iron works.

Mendham today has an area of 17.8 square miles in the south central portion of Morris County. It is part of the Greater New York- New Jersey metropolitan area, located approximately 35 miles west of New York City and 28 miles northwest of Newark. Philadelphia is approximately 80 miles to the southwest. Mendham enjoys convenient access to major highways through routes in northern New Jersey.

Mendham offers broad variety of homes, from antique colonials to gracious estates. Streams, parkland, tall oaks and rolling hills offer a feeling of spaciousness in this town that is often compared to a quaint New England village. However, homes in this part of New Jersey come with a price tag with the average price of a home, three bedrooms, approximately 1,500 square feet of $470,000. Some homes sell for over two and three million dollars.

An annual event in Brookside, the governmental center of the, is the July Fourth Parade and Festival. The Main Street parade reflects the village culture with civic leaders, local float entries, bands, fire trucks, antique vehicles, clowns, and, occasionally, farm animals. The parade route ends at the Brookside Community Center where families can participate in games and contests or buy a hot dog or hamburger at the Rotary club food booth.

Mendham is ideally located, far enough away that you can escape the hustle and bustle of a large city and be surrounded by the peace and quiet of the country. Mendham is a growing, thriving community of professional people who would love nothing more than to welcome you to their town.
