Mount Holly was originally founded in the autumn of 1677. It was a small country village which may have been purchased from the Indians, by Walter Reeves.

In 1795, Mount Holly was voted the County Seat of Burlington and has remained the county seat ever since.

Mount Holly is know as an Historical Township. The Washington House, located on High Street, was a tavern in 1749, and is now home of United States Congressman James Saxton.

When Burlington County Hospital was built in 1881, it had beds for only seven patients. The Relief Fire Company was organized in 1752. The Old Courthouse was built in 1796 and the County Jail in 1810.

All of these sites bring history alive in Mount Holly. Justus C. Strawbridge, of the famous Strawbridge & Clothier, worked as a clerk in a dry goods store on Main Street. After he left Mount Holly, he formed a Partnership with Isaac H. Clothier, a grandchild of Mount Holly residents.

Mount Holly served as a regional shopping and service center for the county, and is still the home of many major businesses such as Haddonfield Lumber Company, Goldy's Pharmacy and Acme Markets. Specialty stores such as David Jewelers and The Shoe String remain anchored to the shopping district.

When Mount Holly became an Urban Enterprize Zone, Burlington County College partnered with the township to create the Business and Career Development Center. This center exists to assist businesses with all types of assistance they may need, provide individuals with career guidance, and give the residents of Mount Holly access to the college right here in Mount Holly.
