Incorporated in 1928, Parsippany - Troy Hills has an area of 25 square miles, and is located in Morris County approximately 25 miles west of New York City. It is the largest municipality in Morris County and is the home of many corporate and division headquarters. Major businesses include AT&T, Nabisco, Prudential, and American Home Products.
The name Parsippany is derived from the Indian name "Parseponong", meaning the place where the rivers run together. Much of the current development began with the establishment of summer communities. Many distinct neighborhood communities developed including Manor Lakes, Lake Parsippany, Lake Hiawatha, Lake Intervale, Glacier Hills, Mt. Tabor and Sedgefield. It is only one of seventeen communities to be awarded the Tree City USA honor for the past 20 years. The police department is one of three nationally accredited forces in New Jersey. Parsippany has a very active recreation commission, sponsoring year round activities for all ages. There are 17 parks with 25 ball fields, public tennis courts, horseback riding, ice skating and swimming. Parsippany also owns two golf courses, one of which is rated among the best in the state.
Morris County is rich in history, offering many lovely museums and
historical sites such as Jockey Hollow (Morristown Historical Park), Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, the Frelinghuysen Arboretum and the Morris Art Museum. Recreational areas are extensive, offering many parks, riding and biking trails, golf courses, tennis courts equestrian facilities, community pools and lakes. Nearby Morristown, the county seat, offers shopping, dozens of restaurants, a movie theater complex, the Community Theater for symphonies and world-renowned performers and other attractions. Shopping is abundant in neighboring communities and within minutes of the Livingston, Short Hills and Bridgewater malls. As part of the New York metropolitan area, Parsippany is within an hour's commute to NYC and its extensive cultural, sports, dining and employment opportunities.
In terms of commutation, Parsippany is in an excellent location with easy access to major highways such as: State Routes 10 and 24; U.S. Routes 46 and 202; and Interstates 78, 80, 280 and 287. New Jersey Transit provides rail commutation service, with direct access to New York City, plus local and area bus service. Morristown Municipal Airport houses corporate jets for businesses.
The opportunity for higher learning at the college and university levels is also available within Morris County at Drew University (Madison), Fairleigh Dickenson University (Madison-Florham Park), St. Elizabeth's College (Convent Station) and Morris County Community College (Randolph).
