West Paterson is a suburban town of mountain and river edge neighborhoods. The Borough is located in the northeastern part of the state about 20 miles west of New York City. It is one of sixteen municipalities in Passaic County. The Borough is located in the northeastern section of New Jersey and the lower end of the county, about 20 miles west of New York City.
West Paterson doesn't really lie west of its namesake, the City of Paterson. Actually it is situated to the southwest of Paterson, New Jersey's third most populous city. To the east is the City of Clifton. To the south and west are the Township of Little Falls and Totowa Borough, respectively.
Though West Paterson is a highly developed municipality, with a mixture of residential, retail, office, and industrial properties, a significant portion of the Borough remains open space due to municipal parkland, two County parks, and a two reservoirs.
The name of the Borough, of course, comes from its location near the City of Paterson, which was named for William Paterson, who had an illustrious record of service for the state and nation
West Paterson, is now a town of 11,300 people, and has become a center of industry and tremendous growth in the past couple of decades. In fact, there has been so much new development, builders are now beginning to look to the quarries for new building sites.
