Population: 172 Malaga is a small town of roughly 200 people. It is situated along US 285, less than 10 miles from the town of Loving and about 20 miles from the Texas border. There are several communities within a 5-mile radius of Malaga which have populations under 1,000, so the lifestyle in this area is decidedly simple. In fact, at the main intersection in Malaga (US 285 and NM Highway 396) there are a few homes, an abandoned school and a Cristo Rey Catholic Church. This area was originally settled by Swiss immigrants, then later by Italian laborers who named it for the grapes which grew there. Today, the vineyards are gone as is much of the community.

The Carlsbad Caverns National Park, which contains one of the world's largest underground chambers and countless formations, is within 30 minutes of Malaga.
