Armonk, in the Town of North Castle, is one of the most desirable areas in Westchester County because of its excellent school district (Byram Hills School District) and its easy commute to New York City. Tucked away in the upcountry region north of White Plains, Armonk is separated from that city by seven miles of watershed wilderness.
Visitors are often surprised by the unusual array of restaurants, gourmet food stores and take-out establishments filling storefronts along Main Street. The eating places rely on the sizable office neighborhood hidden in the surrounding hills, including IBM's corporate headquarters, which has overlooked Armonk for 30 years, and the new Swiss Re headquarters being built nearby. IBM is the town's largest taxpayer, supplying a quarter of the tax base.
Today, Armonk remains an area of rugged beauty, with stretches of protected open space. It is bordered by Interstate 684 and Route 22 and is surrounded by seven communities, including Greenwich, Conn.
The development of transportation has made Armonk a magnet for corporate and residential development. IBM's arrival raised real estate values and enriched the local culture culture, providing funds for various community projects, including the acquisition and preservation of the 300-year old Smith Tavern, headquarters for the North Castle Historical Society.
The town supervisor and the Conservation Board have doubled the amount of public open space, now totaling 1,712 acres. The town's newest park in downtown Armonk has 20 acres with ball fields, tennis courts and a playground. Wampus Brook Park provides a stocked pond for children's fishing and a gazebo. Other parks in Armonk are Cats Rock Park, Clark Field, and Whipponwill Ridge.
Armonk residents are proud of the Byram Hills school system, which regularly produces National Merit Scholars and has an academic program that stresses science, technology and the environment.
Armonk has mostly single family homes or new townhouses with homeowner association.
