Newburgh is a diverse community that welcomes visitors to experience its historic landmarks and beautiful waterfront. The City is currently in a period of growth in community investment, improving the lives of all of its citizens. Simply stated, Newburgh is a great place to live, work and play!

Located just 40 miles from Manhattan, Orange County is one of the most attractive areas in the New York metropolitan area. Affordable housing, excellent school systems, a low crime rate, outstanding road, rail and air transportation, lack of congestion, and a wide range of recreational activities offer unique advantages for business and for living. Orange County has an excellent transportation system, with air, rail and local bus service providing access throughout the county as well as to major metropolitan areas including New York City and Albany.

Located on the glorious Montgomery Street in Newburgh, NY, the Captain David Crawford House is the headquarters of the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands. Built in 1834, this neoclassical mansion was once the home of shipbuilder, David Crawford. David was the owner of the sloops and early steamboats that plyed the Hudson from his dock at the foot of Third Street in Newburgh.

The Crawford House is also home to one of the most unique collections of early Hudson Valley artwork, as well as archival photographs of people and businesses in the region.

The former Dutch Reformed Church in Newburgh, New York, is an outstanding Greek Revival building designed in 1835 by Alexander Jackson Davis.

The monumental structure borrows proportions, siting, and details from classical Greek precedents. Intended as a symbol of the community's enlightened taste, it commanded a dominant view over the Hudson. The DRC is "the greatest surviving ecclesiastical commission of America's greatest architect of the era" according to J. Winthrop Aldrich, former New York Deputy Commissioner of Historic Preservation.

Deconsecrated since 1967, the structure has suffered severely on the exterior, although the sweeping interior is remarkably well preserved. Long appreciated by architectural historians, the building was named a National Historic Landmark in 2001. In 2002, the Newburgh Preservation Association funded the building's Historic Structure Report, delivered April 2003.

From April 1782 to August 1783, General George Washington, commander in chief of the Continental Army, made his military headquarters and residence at the Hasbrouck family's fieldstone farmhouse in Newburgh. Washington's Headquarters is located 12 miles north of the forts at West Point.

The Hasbrouck property, acquired and opened by the State of New York in 1850, was the first publicly operated historic site in the United States. Today, museum exhibits of artifacts recall the events during 1782-83, when Washington's army stood ready for battle until the final days of the Revolution. In the Hasbrouck house, furnishings, personal effects, and reproductions recreate the daily lives of the general, his wife, his officers, slaves, and servants during their 16-1/2-month stay.
