At the crossroads of two important pre-Revolutionary war trails, Goshen began its life as a community in 1714. As early as 1727, it had become an outpost of a colonial government and the center of a booming agricultural region. Government and agriculture still play an important role in Goshen's life today.

Goshen owes much to its past. That it was a place where fortunes could be made illustrated by the scores of gracious homes that line its streets. Constructed over the better part of two enturies, these architectural gems give Goshen a sense of place and history as they remind us of the men and women who have populated its past. Discover a blend of 18th century beginnings, 19th century achievements, and 20th century advances with a walk through Historical Goshen.

Goshen's claim to fame, however, was to come from the horse - the trotter, to be precise. By developing and popularizing the standard-bred horse for harness racing, Goshen became the "trotting capital of the world". Take a tour of the Harness Racing Museum andthe Historic Track, a National Landmark where the Hambletonian Stakes - the premiere event of harness racing, originated.

If nature walks are more to your liking, try the Orange Heritage Trail, the converted rail bed of the well known Erie Railroad. It extends from Middletown , NY to Harriman, NY. Once completed, this 20 mile trail will wind itself through a bird and wildlife sanctuary, past historic landmarks, rolling meadows, babbling brooks and quaint, historic villages.

Located just 40 miles from Manhattan, Orange County is one of the most attractive areas in the New York metropolitan area. Affordable housing, excellent school systems, a low crime rate, outstanding road, rail and air transportation, lack of congestion, and a wide range of recreational activities offer unique advantages for business and for living. Orange County has an excellent transportation system, with air, rail and local bus service providing access throughout the county as well as to major metropolitan areas including New York City and Albany.

The Harness Museum
The museum's historic collection includes more than 1,500 works of fine art; 1,000 pieces of ephemera (tickets, programs, scrapbooks, etc.); 5,000 photographs; 300 jackets, caps and helmets; 50 sulkies and harness; and 200 trophies. Items not on display are kept in safe, climate-controlled storage areas to protect them from deterioration. The Peter D. Haughton Library includes more than 2,000 books and bound periodicals and more than 2,000 videos on the sport of harness racing as well as general equine documentation.

That the Hall of Fame should be located in the Cradle of the Trotter, Goshen, is only natural. It is in The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame that the sport of harness racing is honored - its history, its heroes, and its story today. Housed in the Tudor-style building, that was once William Cane's Good Time Stable built by George Ford, owner of nearby Stony Ford Farm, in 1913, The Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame serves two communities - the community in which it resides as well as the international harness racing community. To the surrounding towns and their citizens, the Museum not only tells the story of harness racing, it also serves as a community cultural center and educational institution. Today, Goshen's Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame is an internationally known and respected institution dedicated to the sport of harness racing. It carries on the harness racing tradition which was born in this country and is now enjoyed worldwide.

Goshen Historic Track
In 1951, the Hall of Fame of the Trotter was established on property adjacent to the Track and the stands today honoring the greats of the harness horse world. The National Park Service designated Historic Track as a registered Landmark in 1966 and 1979 marked another beginning for this famous and beautiful park. A nonprofit organization, Goshen Historic Track, Inc. took the reins from the Harriman and Gerry families and are operating the Track for the purpose of preserving training and racing here. Other plans for the use of the Track have included conducting community events on the property. Concerts and other arts performances are planned for the near future. The exciting sounds of hoofbeats will mingle with the sounds of music, laughter and fun for everyone who come to Historic Track in the future.
