Mahopac Chamber of Commerce Beautiful lake Mahopac in the Winter. It is believed that the name "Mahopac", originating from the Indians that once lived here, has its roots from this lake. The legend describes two Indians who were paddling across the lake. While being passed from one Indian to another, a certain pack of cigarettes was said to have accidentally fallen into the water. Disappointed but still light-hearted, the Indian exclaimed "I lost Ma 'Ho' Pack." Little did this Indian know, but a city of equally light-hearted and clumsy people had just been born. Flourishing forth from its bustling downtown center at the intersection of routes 6 and 6N, the town of Mahopac has not one but several major social centers. The most popular, perhaps, is the Mahopac Olympic Diner (open 24 hours). There were a few tense moments after town officials declared the Olympic Diner as "too shiny" following a recent renovation, but popularity and business remain strong. Rivaling the Olympic Diner is the town's 7-11. Limiting parking to 1 hour without the purchase of gas hurt business from Mahopac High School until students began buying gas in $1 amounts at 1 hour intervals, thereby extending visits to many, many hours. Mahopac "International" Airport, the probable destination of all lost luggage, is also worth visiting. Don't forget to see Mahopac's three-story building. Conveniently located in downtown Mahopac, a good view of Mahopac is possible from the third floor. This building is also old, and possibly historical. See other communities near Mahopac |
