North Salem, a rural community of 6,000 residents, is dotted with picturesque lakes, twisting country lanes, and sprawling horse farms. This lovely corner of the County covers 22 square miles and is composed of Salem Center, Purdys, Croton Falls and North Salem. There is easy access to I-684 and 1-84 and two stations on Metro North at Purdys and Croton Falls. The distance to New York City is 36 miles.

Recreation:
The town is an equestrian's delight, with many farms where horses may be enjoying their pastures or working out in riding rings. Old Salem Farm is a nationally known venue for shows and competitions. The Golden Bridge Hunt Club, a fully accredited member of the American Fox Hounds Association, is one of the oldest fox hunting clubs in the country, founded in North Salem over 60 years ago. There are also a variety of smaller horse farms and facilities. The North Salem Riding Trails Association offers miles of beautiful trail riding.

In addition are the 1000-acre Mountain Lakes Camp; the Open Land Foundation for hiking and nature studies; Joe Bohdrum Park for picnics, sports and special events. Lakeside Field Club offers swimming and tennis to members, while the Salem Golf Club and Bloomerside feature golf for members.

Drive along June Road (Old Route 124) to Hardscrabble Road, past wonderful 19th Century homes and landscapes. The North Salem Vineyard is well worth a visit. There are several varieties of wine available for sampling or purchase, red and white, dry and sweet. The North Salem Harvest Festival takes place there every October, with a variety of foods for sale in sampling sizes prepared by local restaurants.

Outhouse Orchards, to the west on Hardscrabble Road, is a popular source for produce, and some apple picking is allowed. Children like to visit the farmyard animals that live next to the sales building. There is a bakery at Outhouse Orchards as well as a greenhouse. Take a stroll through Japanese Gardens at the Hammond Museum. The Hammond Museum, with its extensive art collection and its varied concert programs, helps to meet the cultural needs of the townspeople

Education:
The North Salem School District includes Pequenakonck Elementary School, the North Salem Middle School and a comprehensive 9th - 12th Grade High School. The district's commitment to small class sizes encourages the use of a variety of teaching techniques across grade levels and the disciplines. An active PTO provides an exceptional after-school activity program for all students in grades kindergarten through five.

Middle School students enjoy a solid curriculum complemented by both honors and gifted opportunities as well as a variety of exploratory courses, trips to Washington and Boston and co-curricular and intramural activities. The High School offers eight advanced placement courses. an honors track. numerous programs in the studio and the performing arts. and a host of intramural and interscholastic sports. Over 96% of the Class of 2000 went on to higher education.
