The Town of Clarkstown

Many options exist for those interested in living in the town of Clarkstown. The average list price of a single family home is $682,282, with a range of $329,900 to $3,500,000.

The Town of Clarkstown was created by an act of the New York State Legislature on March 18, 1791, during Washington’s first term of office.

Clarkstown is located 25 miles from midtown Manhattan, and New City is the seat of both Town Government and Rockland County Government. The town is approximately 41 square miles and includes the hamlets of Bardonia, Central Nyack, Congers, Nanuet, New City, Rockland Lake, Valley Cottage, West Nyack, all of the village of Upper Nyack, and portions of the Villages of Nyack and Spring Valley. A Town Board consisting of a Supervisor and four Councilpersons, all of whom are elected at large, governs Clarkstown. The Supervisor is the CFO of the Town, as well as a member of the legislative body. Each member of the Town Board has one vote. The Supervisor does not possess a veto, so issues are decided by a majority vote of the Town Board.

As of the year 2000 census, Clarkstown’s population was 82,082. The town is presently ranked the fifth safest place among 300 communities with populations over 75,000 people. It is serviced by its own 171 member police department that covers the entire Town with the exception of the Spring Valley portion. (Spring Valley has its own police department.)

Clarkstown has about 700 acres of parkland. There are county and state parks within its boundaries, as well as historic sites dating back to the Revolutionary War. It is also moving to preserve its undeveloped land. Since 2000 the Town Board has bought nearly 100 acres. Acquisitions range from unused farm fields in Congers to wetlands in West Nyack and mountainsides in Valley Cottage. The town has also taken control of 458 acres around or near the Lake DeForest reservoir with a conservation easement in exchange for a 50% tax break for United Water New York. Clarkstown has many recreational facilities for its residents. They include four Community Centers, three outdoor pools, three picnic areas, two picnic shelters, twelve ball fields, one soccer field, two bocci ball courts, two tennis courts, one wheel park, five playgrounds, four outdoor basketball courts, and a historic home, barn and use of various school facilities.

For those who like to mix entertainment with shopping, opportunities abound along Route 59 which has the Nanuet Mall and the Palisades Center along with various strip shopping centers.

Within its borders, Clarkstown has four different school districts – Clarkstown, East Ramapo, Nanuet, and Nyack. Each provides an excellent education for its students. You can find out more about each district by clicking on the schools link. The town also has four public libraries and all are part of the Greater Hudson Valley/Catskill Library System.

Clarkstown is a wonderful place to live.
