The southernmost river town in North Carolina is Calabash. Its postition on the river and near the Atlantic made it a natural site for the first Calabash restaurant, an oyster roast which opened in a crude shed with a sawdust floor in 1935. Calabash has an auspicious history of Revolutionary War involvement and presidential visits.
Now known as the "Seafood Capital of the World" boasting more than 20 restaurants, Calabash has become known around the world for their deep-fried style of seafood. Seafood arives fresh at the dock for many restaurants serving the famous "Calabash-style" of food daily.
The residents of this quaint village are primarily retirees. They play a very active role in this thriving village. The atmosphere of this city is very welcoming and warm. Unique gift and specialty shops as well as several golf courses add to the attraction of this town.
