Currituck is located in Currituck County

Population: 700 Currituck Beach Lighthouse/OBC
Twenty years ago, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse was in need of repair. The nonprofit Outer Banks Conservationists (OBC) was created to preserve the lighthouse when no one else was willing to step in and restore the national landmark. Since then, the OBC has spent more than two decades and nearly 1.5 million from private dollars restoring, maintaining and operating the lighthouse. The OBC opened the lighthouse to the public in 1991 and it is currently the only lighthouse in North Carolina open to the public.

Lighthouse Conveyance
Congress recently enacted a law, the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000, co-sponsored by North Carolina Congressman Walter Jones, establishing a national preservation program for the nation’s lighthouses by conveying them to eligible owners. For the first time, this law puts nonprofits like the OBC on equal footing with state and local governments to gain ownership when lighthouses become surplus federal property.

The federal government is giving the lighthouse away as early as this fall. The local county government is competing against the OBC for the application.

With decades of successful partnership with the state of North Carolina and the U.S. Coast Guard to maintain the property, the OBC wishes to become permanent steward of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.
