From tot to retiree, New Bern and Craven County boast excellent public and private schools including a community college and two other degree-granting facilities, vocational schools and continuing education courses for those who desire to learn.
Medical facilities are outstanding with an ever expanding hospital and physicians of most specialties. Recreational facilities lure many to retire here for the climate permits golfing, fishing, boating, tennis and other outdoor sports the year 'round. You can fish for bass, drum, flounder, catfish, or bream or golf on championship 18-hole courses with waterfront fairways. There are music and theater groups for all ages and interests. The Riverfront Convention Center opened in May 2000 and hosts groups from all over.
The first Capitol of the State, New Bern is rich in history -- from the original Governor's home, Tryon Palace built in 1770 and now restored to its magnificent Georgian splendor -- to homes, stores and churches which date back to the early 1800's. New Bern is also the home of Pepsi Cola and the original drugstore is now a Pepsi emporium filled with memorabilia.
In addition, New Bern is only 20 miles from MCAS Cherry Point; and 30 miles from Camp Lejeune. Both Bases offer Exchange, Commissary and Hospital privileges to active duty, retirees, and dependents.
