Utilities Noted industrialist Ohio Columbus Barber founded Barberton. O.C. Barber, having feuded with Akron over taxes, moved his prospering Diamond Match Company to 1,000 acres he had bought nearby and created a new city in 1890. He had already proven himself inventive in business – creating the matchbook, selling advertising on the outside, and coining the phrase “Close cover before striking.” He was so adept at developing his new community that within a year Barberton had a railroad, many factories, a population of 2,000 and a lake as the town’s centerpiece. Barber later poured his energy into a costly experimental farm and lavish manor house. It was observed that the city grew as if by magic. Henceforth Barberton was promoted as “The Magic City” and school teams were nicknamed “The Magics.” This spirit of innovation continues to thrive in Barberton today. It is a center of research for Babcock and Wilcox Nuclear and Fossil Fuel Divisions and is home to PPG's manufacturing of Teslin™, a synthetic polymer paper. A diversity of smaller companies also play a vital role in Barberton's economy. The interstate and Ohio highway systems intersect Barberton and are situated along the perimeter of the city. Barberton is readily accessible for travel on North-South and East-West interstates/Ohio highways with little congestion. The Akron-Canton Airport, located on I-77 (south), is within 20 minutes driving time of downtown Barberton, with seven major airlines serving the airport. Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport is located 45 minutes from Barberton and is served by 22 national and international airlines. See other communities near Barberton |
