Powell Village Office Powell's first Mayor, who served from 1973-1976, was Don Aldrich. He was instrumental in developing Powell’s master plan that eventually helped Powell to development from a village to a city. He was there to hire the first full-time policeman and maintenance man. He helped transition the then-village owned water system to a countywide system that now saves many tax dollars. Today, the upscale town of Powell, remains a safe and quiet community and is located about 20 miles north of downtown Columbus. Despite its small size, Powell is well known for many "big" attractions. The Columbus Zoo, which encompasses over 400 acres of animal exhibits, habitats, gardens, picnic area, and a golf course, is located in Powell. Another, more famous golf course, known as Muirfield, is located just minutes south of Powell. Muirfield is the creation of golf legend Jack Nicklaus, who grew up in the Columbus area. This course hosts the PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament each year and attracts the likes of Tiger Woods. Other area attractions are the Wyandot Lake Adventure Park, the Olentangy Indian Caverns, and the Martin-Perry Homestead. Powell is convenient enough to Columbus, yet is not affected by any big-city headaches. The town is located just west of Highway 315 (which runs through Columbus) and US 23.
