Youngstown Area Chamber of Commerce Youngstown, the seat of Mahoning County, is located in Northeast Ohio. It is situated in a coal and iron region near the Pennsylvania line. The first iron furnace was built in 1803 and Youngstown became one of the country's largest iron and steel centers until the 1970's. Some steel is still produced, as well as rubber goods, electric lamps, and a variety of other products. Youngstown State University was established in 1908. This 140-acre facility is located near downtown Youngstown with a current enrollment of over 12,533 students. Youngstown is also home to Fellows Riverside Garden and Grand Lobby Edward W. Powers Auditorium, which is home of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra. The Butler Institute of American Art, listed on the National Register of Historical Places, is the first structure ever built in the United States dedicated to house priceless works by American artists.
