Welcome to Eugene, Oregon a city so friendly it has a first name! Many nationally known magazines have touted Eugene for its livability; pleasant climate, cultural diversity, quality of professional services, and economy. So whether you call it "home" or you've just stopped by to visit, you'll always find something unique in Eugene.

Nestled in the Willamette Valley between the breathtaking scenery of the Cascade Mountains and the Oregon Coast Range, Eugene is often referred to as "The Emerald City". Douglas Fir forest border Eugene on three sides and account for its past reputation as a lumber town.

The Willamette River flows on a diagonal course through the center of the city. One of the most loved and used facilities is the park and greenway system that borders the entire river. Four graceful bike-pedestrian-only bridges connect both sides of the river and provide a loop system for walkers, joggers, bikers, and roller-bladers.

Home to more than 130,000 people, Eugene is Oregon's second largest city. It covers approximately 36 square miles, with the Willamette River running through the heart of the city and the McKenzie River joining the Willamette to the north of town. The elevation is 426 above sea level and the city's topography features Skinner Butte to the north of downtown and the south, the landmark Spencer Butte, now a 310-acre city park.

Plan a visit to Eugene's internationally recognized premier rhododendron garden. Atop the forested ridgeline of southeast Eugene, Hendricks Park overlooks the Willamette River, the University of Oregon and the City of Eugene. The 77 acres of forested park land contain Douglas fir trees over two hundred years old and hiking trails that wander through a rich forest flora of ferns, trilliums and other wildflowers. Founded in 1951 through the joint efforts of the American Rhododendron Society and the Eugene Parks Department, the 12-acre garden displays more than 6,000 ornamental plants highlighting rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias and viburnums. Free guided tours of the Rhododendron Garden offered each spring.

Eugene's climate, with an average temperature of 53 degrees, is one of the city's attractive features. Mild winters, long growing seasons, and few drastic weather changes are characteristic. Normal annual rainfall is 43 inches which falls mostly between September and June. Eugene is positioned at latitude 44° 7' N, longitude 123° 13' W.
