Location
McMinnville is located in the western portion of Oregon’s agriculturally rich Willamette Valley on U.S. Highway 99W. The quiet, friendly city enjoys a central location to Pacific Ocean beaches (50 miles), the big city (Portland - 30 miles to the northeast), and the state capitol (Salem - 25 miles southeast), with an easy scenic drive to Mt. Hood and other ski areas.
Climate
Our mild climate has a mean average temperature from June to September of 70 degrees (F) and 40 degrees (F) from November to February. The average rainfall is 42 inches. The growing season is 174 days and the elevation is 157 feet above sea level.
Services
The city of McMinnville is a full-service city which provides a broad range of public services, including public safety, public works, library, planning, and parks and recreation. McMinnville’s fire department continually maintains a Class 3 insurance rating, affording McMinnville one of the lowest insurance rates. The police department provides 24-hour protection.
McMinnville established its own Water and Light Department in 1889, now existing with no bonded indebtedness. The Water and Light Department offers electrical and water rates that are among the lowest in the Northwest. Northwest Natural gas company supplies gas to the city. City Sanitary & Recycling Service, a privately owned and operated firm since 1928, provides a wide range of residential, commercial and industrial waste and recycling services for McMinnville and Yamhill County. Water is supplied by two reservoirs in the coast range that will assure the city an adequate contamination-free supply into the next century. The sanitary sewer system covers about 90 percent of the city. Its 108-mile pipe system utilizes 12 pumping stations to deliver sewage to a water reclamation facility where state of the art water purification occurs. The plant is equipped to handle normal city growth through 2015.
Education
McMinnville area boasts excellent public and private schools, McMinnville School District’s six elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school serve over 5,000 students. McMinnville schools provide additional programs such as special education, talented and gifted, English as a Second Language, health, counseling and speech services to assist students in being successful learners. A comprehensive co-curricular program includes participation in athletics, music, drama and extended learning activities.
McMinnville is home to Linfield College. This independent, comprehensive liberal arts college is nationally recognized for its strong teaching faculty, outstanding science programs and distinctive international emphasis. Chartered in 1858, Linfield is one of the oldest colleges in the west and offers 34 majors on the McMinnville campus. Linfield maintains a 12-1 student to faculty ratio. The 193-acre residential campus serves over 1,500 students in 45 buildings.
Chemeketa Community College’s McMinnville Campus offers a wide range of educational services in McMinnville and Yamhill County, including transferable college credit courses (first two years); non-credit, personal enrichment classes; advising in academic and career development financial aid information; and a Business Skills Training Program.
