(Roseburg is becoming an increasingly popular vacation destination for both Oregonians and out-of-state visitors)
The lakes, rivers and reservoirs of Douglas County provide ample boating and fishing settings, especially on the beautiful North Umpqua, a river that's famous among fishermen. The North Umpqua offers fishing opportunities for trout, salmon, bass, and is one of the world's only rivers with a native run of summer steelhead.
The many cultural activities in Roseburg include a variety of live theatrical and musical productions presented throughout the year by the Umpqua Actors Community Theater and the Umpqua Community College theater department, as well as musical entertainment provided by the Roseburg Community Concert Association and the Umpqua Valley Symphony Association. Covered bridges, mid-1800 restored homes and the nationally acclaimed Douglas County Museum of History and Natural History add to the area's rich historic tradition.
There are a wide variety of touring and shopping activities available. Start with the Wildlife Safari by stalking wild animals with your camera at North America's foremost exotic zoological park. Stop by the Safari education center and theatre, then feed some animals at the children's petting zoo. Get a taste of Douglas County by touring some of the region's eight wineries, which grow chardonnay, pinot noir, getwürztraminer, reisling, zinfandel and cabernet sauvignon varietals. Finish by returning to Roseburg, where you'll find a shopper's paradise. Featured is a historic church, stained glass and all, that has been converted into shops. Nearby are various boutiques loaded with unique items that are sure to catch your eye. Or check out the Umpqua Valley Arts Center, where the works of many of the local artists are displayed.
