Originally settled by the Dutch, Swedes, and English, the name Bensalem didn't stick until 1979, when the post office made it official. Up until that time, the area's boundaries as well as its name changed as houses were built, businesses were established, and claims were staked. Today, the population is a little more diverse but the houses are still being built and the businesses are still being established along with many new amenities such as a state-of-the-art amphitheatre with concession stand, expanded and updated roadways, more community parks and recreation areas, and brand new senior housing to meet the needs of Bensalem's oldest and dearest residents. City officials boasts of new incentives for setting up business in vacant facilities along with tax reductions and a commitment to maintaining a high quality of life for everyone in the community.
Most of Bensalem's orginal architecture still stands and has been expertly restored to house unique shops, delightful restaurants, and professional businesses. Sidewalks made for strolling along with green open spaces instill the relaxed atmosphere this town has managed to maintain with such close proximity to a major metropolitan area. This perfect mix provides residents with big city conveniences coupled with a place to "get away from it all", whether your raising a family, retiring, or an individual looking for a complete lifestyle.
Community resources and services are many as well as abundant recreational opportunities. Being one of the first areas settled in the nation, historical sites abound including the site of George Washington's crossing of the Delaware. A drive through the countryside encounters numerous covered bridges while hot air balloons offer a bird's eye view of Pennsylvania's natural beauty. Visit one of several old wineries producing award-winning wines or spend the day at Neshaminy State Park where watersports include boating, fishing, and swimming along with hiking, biking, and picnicking.
