Doylestown Township grew from the Doyle family's settlement, started in the 1730s. Fonthill, Henry Mercer's sixty room mansion, was built in 1910 and is currently operated as a museum by the Bucks County Historical Society. Aldie, a Tudor mansion on Dublin Pike, was built in 1927 by William Mercer, Henry's brother, and is now the home of the Heritage Conservancy.

Delaware Valley College, along Route 202 in the western part of Doylestown Township, is the largest landowner in the Township. The College began life as the National Farm School in 1896. Today it is a private, 4-year college that still specializes in agriculture-related science programs, also offering liberal arts and business degrees.
