Reading has long been known as the unofficial capital of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. It is famous for its wonderful pretzels! The original purchaser of the land where Reading sits was William Penn. He had his two sons settle on the land. The named it Reading for their home in England.

Reading is known as the Outlet Capital of the World. It has more than 300 factory outlet stores.
Pagoda-Reading has a several story bright red and yellow pagoda built atop Mount Penn that can be seen throughout all of city. In the early 1900's the area was mined. After citizens complained about the eyesore left behind, the landowner erected a Pagoda atop the eye sore.
The city also has a Historical Society with a grand collection of county history artifacts.
The main street through Reading(5th Street) was renamed 5th Avenue after the famous candy bar which was first made at Luden's Candy Factory (now owned by Hershey's, a Reading institution for over a hundred years.
