In May, 1870, Colonel John Donelson moved his family up Stone's River from Fort Nashboro seeking a place to live. Colonel Donelson built cabins off Lebanon Road approximately 150 yards from the present-day bridge crossing the Stone's River. The settlement at Clover Bottom was known officially as Stone's River Station or Donelson Station. Colonel Donelson planted the first cotton in Middle Tennessee in this bottom.
The Stone's River rose and flooded the bottom, so Colonel Donelson moved his family across the Cumberland River to Mansker's Station. Donelson would later move to Kentucky. Appropriately, the community of Donelson was named after the area's first family of early settlers.
This fertile clover bottom was to become the future hub of horse racing in the area. 1804 is the earliest date recorded for horse racing in the area. Colonel Donelson's daughter, Rachel, married Andrew Jackson in 1791. Jackson was later to become the seventh president of the United States. Andrew and Rachel purchased 425 acres of land in 1804 known as the Hermitage. On this property the beautiful Hermitage mansion stands today.
The area between the Stone's River Bridge and the Wilson County line became known as the settlement of Hermitage.
