(The Municipal Building - City Hall)
The richness of Jackson's history is found in its neighborhoods and buildings. Two streets - East Main Street, with its many Victorian period homes, and Northwood, developed after World War I as Jackson's first "subdivision," are on the National Register of Historic Places. Other sites on the National Register include the recently restored Carnegie Library, now a cultural arts center; Lane College, which opened in 1882 as a high school for African Americans; and the Bemis community, a cotton mill town developed in the early 1900s.
Individuals from every cultural background imaginable are calling Jackson home due to the city’s enviable quality of life and excellent work environment. And the presence of these cultures is enriching the lives and daily experiences of all. Located within a day’s drive of 76 percent of the U.S. population, Jackson is ideally located for those who travel and do business across the country. Top-rated hospitals, award-winning schools, affordable housing and a wealth of recreational opportunities combine to make the city a great place to visit, work and live.
With it's location on I-40 between Memphis (85 miles to the west) and Nashville (120 mils to the east), Jackson has long been considered a stopover between the two cities. But over the years, Jackson has evolved into a destination of its own: Tourism expenditures for Madison County in 1994 were more then $90 million. Furthermore, Jackson's Casey Jones village, named for the legendary railroad pioneer, is a statewide top-10 tourist attraction, according to the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development. Adding to the tourist dollars are many yearly events, the Miss Tennessee Pageant and NAIA Women's Basketball Championship tournament bring in an estimated $6 million each year. Jackson is located approximately a days drive from: The Great Smokey Mountains (6 hours), Florida's Gulf Coast (8 hrs.), the Ozarks of Missouri (7 hrs.), and hour from Beale Street, Graceland (Home of Elvis Presley) in Memphis, and less then 2 hours from The Grand Ole Opry an the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.
