Maryville is located in Blount County

Population: 23,000 People are discovering Maryville, Tennessee and they're moving here in droves. Located in Blount County, Maryville was named in honor of Mary Grainger Blount, wife of Governor William Blount. The population of Maryville is more than 23,000, and the town encompasses 13 square miles.

Like many downtowns throughout the nation, development of contemporary malls and the proliferation of shopping centers lured businesses and customers away from the downtown area. However, unlike many other downtowns throughout the country that have been lost, dozens of historic structures in downtown Maryville remain and have enjoyed continuous use, or have been rehabilitated more recently. Currently, Maryville's downtown offers the community and visitors entertainment, office, restaurant, retail, recreation, government, education and religious institutions, medical, and housing opportunities. In addition, the new Blount County Library and scheduled community programs will further improve downtown's position in attracting individuals and families throughout the weekdays and weekends. The City of Maryville is committed to helping invigorate reinvestment of downtown properties by obtaining grants used for road and sidewalk improvements, safe and attractive lighting, benches, landscape and informative signage. The City and participating community businesses also sponsor numerous events downtown that add to the use and enjoyment of the downtown area.

It's easy to see why people are moving to Marysville, Arts and Entertainment Channel selected Maryville as one of its " Top 10 Cities to Have it All!" Your Money magazine selected Maryville one of tomorrow's Hottest Retirement Destinations."

The parks and recreation programs and facilities for the City of Maryville are managed by the Recreation and Parks Commission of Maryville – Alcoa – Blount County. This Commission is a co-operative effort between these three local governments to provide parks and recreation services to the citizens of Blount County in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.

Maryville has five public parks. Everett, John Sevier, Amerine and Sandy Springs Parks are all maintained by the Recreation and Parks Commission Maintenance Department. Greenbelt Park and the Maryville section of the popular Maryville-Alcoa Greenway Trail is maintained by the City’s Public Works Department.

Maryville recreation facilities include the Everett Park Senior Adult Center and John Sevier Pool. Several parks have athlectic fields, playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts. Not to mention some of the best camping and outdoor sports in the Eastern United States. The Commission conducts large-scale special events annually in Maryville, including the nationally known Smoky Mountain Classic Softball Tournament and the Hometown Christmas Illumination of the Greenbelt program.

The Maryville City Schools' four elementary schools, intermediate school, middle school and high school benefit from current technology; full-time guidance counselors; well-equipped media centers; art, band, orchestra, choral music programs; and physical education instruction. All schools in the system are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

A local area computer network connects all classrooms, offices and the library in each school. In addition, a wide area network links all schools with the district office, all city departments and the Internet. Both remedial and enrichment experiences for students are available through after-school tutoring and summer programs. Interscholastic athletic programs include all state athletic association sanctioned sports and swimming. After-school child care is available at all four elementary schools and the intermediate school.

A transition class is offered between kindergarten and first grade. Also, students with learning or other disabilities are served by appropriate programs for each age level. Enrichment for talented and gifted students is included in the classroom setting. Fort Craig Elementary School, a choice school, offers an alternative calendar (9-3), multi-age classes, required parent participation and integrated thematic instruction.

Four elementary schools (Fort Craig, Foothills, John Sevier and Sam Houston) serve grades K-4. Maryville Intermediate School, completed in the fall of 2000, serves grades five and six. Maryville Middle School provide programs for seventh and eighth grades and Maryville High School includes grades nine through twelve.

Maryville is on the cutting edge in many areas of city government, developing and implementing programs to provide a modern, safe, and beautiful place to live and visit.
