Rogersville is Tennessee's Second-Oldest Town, and it's rich and colorful history testifies to this fact. Irishman Joseph Rogers came to America in the early 1780's. After courting the daughter of a prominent local he was married to her, and as a wedding gift, the land upon which Rogersville was established was given to them. In 1786, Hawkins County was created by the North Carolina legislature, and Rogersville was made the county seat. Rogersville prospered because of the stage line that passed through the area, and the town grew throughout the eighteen hundreds.
Rogersville could well be known as Tennessee's best kept secret. Rogersville is a historical town nestled in the hills of East Tennessee between Knoxville and Bristol. Only a short drive to the mountains of the Smokies, the lakes, or six larger cities, it still retains the small homey atmosphere of a town of long ago.
Today, Rogersville population (within the city limits) is 5,100. There are about 10,000 people living in the Rogersville area. Each Spring, the city celebrates the revival of nature with Spring Fling, a festival sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. In July, the largest fireworks display in Tennessee is at Rogersville City Park for the Rogersville Fourth of July Celebration. Each October, the county's oldest festival brings over 37,000 people to Hawkins County to experience Heritage Days, a festival reminiscent of an eighteenth century harvest festival. The city is served by 75 full time employees; 3 parks, including the beautiful 50 acre Rogersville Municipal Park, two swimming pools, five tennis courts, the Swift Park with playground equipment and picnic facilities, the Crockett Springs Park including a nature walk, gazebo, and scenic landscaping and more; the city operates a senior citizen center, a teen center, a Parks & Recreation center, and operates it's own top-ranked, award-winning school system serving grades kindergarten through eighth grade.
