Founded in 1942, Fort Hood is the world's largest Army base and Texas' largest employer. Located halfway between Waco and Austin in the South Central hill country, the facility covers 339 sq. miles and is an open post, meaning it allows visitors to drive through the installation. There are over 1000 acres of military equipment on display along with 2 museums: The 1st Calvary Division Museum and The 2nd Armored Division Museaum, all of which is open to the public.
Home to over 40,000 active duty soldiers and their families, Fort Hood offers many recreational, cultural, and social amenities to both the military personnel and the public. Some of these include a 27-hole Championship Golf Course, arts and craft center, skating center, 4 youth centers, 9 state-of-the-art fitness centers, beaches with swimming, fishing marina, boat dock, camping, waterslide, equestrian trails, plus 190,000 acres of hunting grounds open to the public with Texas hunting licenses.
