The City of Plano has earned a national reputation as one of the best places in the country for employers to do business and for families to live and work. Plano was incorporated in 1873 and chartered as a home rule city in 1961. Plano is located 20 miles north of downtown Dallas and is the largest city in Collin County with a January 1, 2001 estimated population of 236,539.
In 1997, Plano was named the 4th most "Kid-Friendly City" in the United States based on the findings of the Children's Environmental Index. This index is a comparison of 219 U.S. cities that was compiled by Zero Population Growth to determine the relationship between quality of life and population for the nation's children. The City of Plano was also named the 8th Safest City in the United States based on the most recent Federal Bureau of Investigation crime statistics. This was reported in Money magazine's listing of "America's Safest Places." In late 1996, Plano was named the "Best City in the U.S. for Home-based Businesses" by the publication Home Office Computing thanks to a strong telecommunications infrastructure and a dedication to small business development.
Plano was named a 1994 All-America City by the National Civic League and Allstate Foundation. The award is not earned by an individual, department, or organization, but by an entire community for "outstanding grass-roots action and collaboration among the public, private and non-profit sectors in identifying and solving critical community issues." The award recognized Plano for successful implementation of three initiatives: the community's crime prevention efforts, including the Neighborhood Crime Watch program; Practical Parent Education, which provides family support services; and Plano's Children's Medical Clinic, which provides free medical treatment and services to children of families without health insurance.
Recently, Money magazine named Plano the best place to live in the western United States. Its schools and community parks have been awarded many plaques from business and community groups, while 21 publicly traded companies call Plano home (Money, 16 Dec 2003).
State and National School Recognition Programs
Plano schools continuously receive state and national awards and honors. Among the most noteworthy are.
US Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools Award. Twenty two Plano ISD schools have earned this prestigious honor which is presented annually by the SU Department of Education.

State and National Assessments. Plano students continue to score higher than students across the state and nation ont the Texas Assessment of Academic Skolls Tests and on college-entrance exams.
