Population: 40,468 The city is the center of commerce and travel for the area and is known for its diverse commercial interest and its three colleges and universities. The City was established in 1780 and was named for Thomas Harrison, who donated the land for the Rockingham County courthouse. It became the permanent county seat of Rockingham County in 1781 and became incorporated in 1849. It now encompasses 17.3 square miles and was proclaimed a city of the first class in April 1990.

The area is an educational center served by four institutions of learning with a total enrollment of approximately 16,120 students. James Madison University, a state supported school, is located near the geographic center of the City and has approximately 11,500 students. Eastern Mennonite University, a private institution with approximately 1,100 students, is also located in the City. Bridgewater College, located just south of the City, is also private and has an approximate enrollment of 940 students. State-supported Blue Ridge Community College is located just south of the City and has an enrollment of approximately 2580 students.

Air, rail, and bus transportation are available in the area. UP.SO. Air Express operates out of the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Meyers Cave, Virginia and provides both passenger and freight service. There are several private airfields located in the area including Bridgewater Air Park located in Bridgewater, Virginia. The area is served by the Norfolk Southern Corporation Railroad.
