Waterfront condos and luxury apartments have sprung up, new clubs and restaurants have drawn crowds to a fully occupied Waterside Festival Marketplace, and entertainment facilities like the 1,500-seat NorVa entertainment facility have opened their doors. A big part of the city's plan to revitalize the waterfront fell into place when Waterside was built in 1983. The marketplace, adjacent to what is now Town Point Park, was built to house unique retailers and restaurants.
Also in the works for downtown Norfolk are two office buildings: the 100 Main St. Tower, a $40-million, 19-story building, which began construction in July 2001; and the Crown City project, a six-story office tower was open this past fall. Besides retail space on the first floor, the Main Street Tower will feature an art gallery. Other areas undergoing major revitalizations include the 35th Street region. The city is exploring retail opportunities similar to the specialty shops and storefronts found along Colley Avenue in Ghent. Efforts are also underway to restore Church Street to prominence, beginning with the restoration of the Crispus Attucks Theatre. The famous theater, dubbed "Norfolk's Apollo" at one time, enjoyed a national reputation.
