City of Poquoson
757-868-3000

The town was formed in 1952 when a referendum enabled Poquoson to establish its own public school system. In order to maintain this status, the town became a city in 1976.

The twentieth century Poquoson is a remnant of a larger area known from the first days of its settlement as the New Poquoson Parish. This colonial parish was the landed area on the north side of the Old Poquoson River. This land was opened for settlement in the year 1628 and was occupied by people from the settlement at Kecoughtan (Hampton)

With the organization of the colony into counties in 1634, New Poquoson became one of the five seventeenth-century parishes of Charles River County (changed to York in 1642). The present city of Poquoson was the lower precinct of this Parish.

The City of Poquoson, with a population of approximately 12,000 is located adjacent to Langley Air Force Base and NASA and with easy access to all major Tidewater cities. It has become one of the most desirable residential localities in the Tidewater area. Many of the newer residents of the city specifically selected Poquoson as their home because of the reputation for excellence enjoyed by its school system. Poquoson combines the benefits of small town friendliness and pride with the cultural, professional and educational advantages of a major metropolitan area.
