City of Poquoson The twentieth century Poquoson is a remnant of a larger area known from the first days of its settlement as the New Poquoson Parish. This colonial parish was the landed area on the north side of the Old Poquoson River. This land was opened for settlement in the year 1628 and was occupied by people from the settlement at Kecoughtan (Hampton) With the organization of the colony into counties in 1634, New Poquoson became one of the five seventeenth-century parishes of Charles River County (changed to York in 1642). The present city of Poquoson was the lower precinct of this Parish.
