Smithfield Relocation Guide

Smithfield is located in Isle of Wight County

Population: 4,686
"Hams, History, and Hospitality"

No, your eyes do not deceive you. The slogan should indeed read, "Hams, History, and Hospitality." The simple fact is that ham has been a major foundation for this town. After all, the town is named after the same family that started Smithfield Foods. In fact, members of the English monarchy had standing orders for Smithfield's famous hams prior to the Revolutionary War. It should be no surprise that Smithfield has been called the "Ham Capital of the World."

Smithfield's history is more than just ham, of course. Smithfield's Historic District Walking Tour will quickly reveal tree-lined streets stocked with beautiful Colonial, Federal and Victorian homes. In addition, the Isle of Wight Museum showcases Indian artifacts, Civil War memorabilia, community impact and prehistoric fossils from the nearby James River all on display. You will more than likely require at least two or three days to meander through the richness of Smithfield's heritage to truly appreciate it.

Smithfield is perhaps known best as an historic town, but the area is also inundated with romantic getaways. Bed and Breakfasts now occupy many of the town's historic buildings, such as the Smithfield Station Lighthouse. In addition to enjoying the simplicity of a Victorian-themed room, guests also enjoy exquisite dining and the quiet of the surrounding countryside.

Smithfield is easily accessible to the communities of Williamsburg, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Visitors to Smithfield are encouraged to explore these areas as well, and then return each evening to this quaint colonial seaport town for your much-needed rest.
