Camas, Washington is situated in the eastern hills of Clark County and its location provides expansive views of downtown Portland and Mt. Hood. According to the latest census, Camas has approximately 12,534 residents.
Camas has many modern manufacturing companies and industries that are located in the Cascade Business Park. Among these companies are Sharp Microelectronics and Sharp Labs of America, Wafer Tech, Underwriters Laboratories, and Linear Technology.
Lacamas Lake Park is a fisher's paradise, with a nice mixture of bass, bluegill and perch. The park contains a 6-mile network of scenic hiking trails. Many areas exist that are excellent for bird-watching, and a multitude of photographic opportunities abound - especially in mid April, when the Camas Lilies are in bloom. An additional area of interest is the series rock formations located in the potholes, near the falls. Upland forests support variety of wildlife including deer, raccoon, beaver, coyote, osprey, bald eagles, and many other bird species.
There is the Steigerwald Lake Wildlife Refuge which is located on Columbia River in southeast Clark County. Most of the refuge was bought by Corps of Engineers to mitigate for dam impacts. 5.5 miles of hiking/biking trails located on shoreline dike; other public access restricted. Refuge receives heavy use by Canada Geese and other migratory waterfowl.
Camas has a goal to increase business opportunities and thereby make downtown "the place to be". The City of Camas has established a Downtown Visioning Committee to implement and conceptualize ideas for attracting more growth in this vital area of the community.
Historically, Camas had its origins as a paper-mill town operated by Georgia Pacific Corporation. Camas was originally named LaCamas by Native Americans after the Camas roots they used for food.
