Langley, or as it is commonly referred to in literature "Langley by the Sea," is located along near the eastern end of the north shore of the south end of Whidbey Island. It is the second largest incorporated area on Whidbey. Although Langley's offical population is 959, the number of people who claim Langley as their home is 4,878[1]. The geographical area of Langley proper is only 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) but the whole community that is considered to be Langley is 67.86 km² (26.20 mi²)[2]. Aside from official business, the entire ZIP code community is referred to as Langley.

Today, Langley is a tourist destination. Many businesses in the city promote themselves in tourist pamphlets available around the world. Langley is home to a 1930s era movie theatre, a grocery store of the same vintage, a several restaurants serving anything from American cuisine to Greek and Italian, and even an authentic Mexican restaurant about 5 miles from the downtown core.

Langley is served by Island County Fire District #3 and the home of the South Whidbey School District #206 and all the shools on South Whidbey. The current mayor is Neil Colburn (2004-2008), and the police chief is Bob Herzberg.

Based on per capita income, one of the more reliable measures of affluence, Langley ranks 92nd of 522 areas in the state of Washington to be ranked.
