Oak Harbor's small town flavor continues to be displayed in the numerous annual celebrations. The Irish paint the town green in March, and the Dutch fill the town with tulips the last weekend of April during the annual Holland Happening celebration. Patriotism soars and flags abound on the 4th of July and once again during the annual Sea 'N' Sky Fest celebrating the strong alliance between the community and the Navy. Whidbey Island Race Week, held each year in July, has been rated among the top 20 yachting regattas in the world.
Island County is a great place for outdoor recreation. Fishing, kayaking, hiking, biking, boating, bird watching, claming, golfing and camping are favorite sports for residents and visitors alike.
The county is developing an island wide system of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riders. A water trail for kayaks and other small vessels without motors is also being developed. Some hardy souls go in for sailboarding, and wet-suited surfers and divers have their favorite spots.
There are also plenty of organized sports, mostly managed by the county's recreation districts. The programs cover a wide variety of team and individual sports.
